President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was widely ridiculed in April for reciting a fake Bible verse from Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 classic Pulp Fiction during a Pentagon church service. Colin Jost seems to have foreseen it coming.
During a recent visit to The Tonight Show, Jost revealed that he told the SNL writers room before Hegseth’s gaffe became a thing. Wouldn’t it be fun to just say, “Remember that Bible verse from Samuel L. Jackson’s Ezekiel that Hegseth uses in Pulp Fiction?”
The writers deemed Jost’s pitches “so ridiculous” that they said, “You’re going to be spending all this time outside in the cold. And then about two weeks later he actually did it. I thought, ‘Well, good news, we’re being watched, so we’re safe now.'” Jost played Hegseth on SNL this season, receiving rave reviews from critics and viewers.
The real Hegseth attended a Pentagon service in April and read an altered version of Ezekiel 25:17 before Samuel L. Jackson’s character in “Pulp Fiction” shot and killed a man. Hegseth said the prayer was said by Iran’s Sandy 1 Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) mission.
Hegseth called on everyone to pray together and read a prayer that was almost word for word the lines Jackson delivered in Tarantino’s film. And I will defeat you with fierce vengeance and fierce anger those who seek to capture and destroy my brother, and when I take revenge on you, you will know that my call sign is Sandy 1. ”
