Sabrina Carpenter’s Coachella preparation process wasn’t short or sweet.
The pop star went all out for her first-ever headline set, right down to her detailed “doll-like” beauty look, courtesy of longtime makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez.
“She’s always been a very smart, resourceful, and very creative girl,” the beauty pro told Page Six Style, adding that Carpenter’s festival look was a “grown-up version” of her “short and sweet” glam.
Having worked with the chart-topping artist since her Disney days, Gonzalez has had a front row seat to her personal and professional evolution.
“As you grow, you discover and know who you are,” she said. “I think it’s a natural process for[Carpenter]to be in the business and do this every day.”

With that evolution in mind, the duo developed a “modern nostalgia”-inspired look for the big performance. Carpenter was deeply involved in this process from start to finish.
“She has her own inspiration. It’s her mood board,” Gonzalez said, adding, “She’s not creating an image or anything. She already knows how she wants to be perceived.”
However, you don’t need the “Please Please Please” singer’s Pinterest password to recreate the look. We asked Gonzalez about all her behind-the-scenes secrets, from the foundation she “always” uses on clients to the blush she applies during outfit changes (Beauty Bag Home Tour).
make her blush

It wasn’t just Carpenter’s cheeky lyrics that were blush-worthy at Coachella. The star sported an ombre blend of Armani Luminous Silk Cheek Tints, which includes 12 shades and 50.5 shades.
And although there were limited touch-ups during the show, Gonzalez was nearby during Carpenter’s costume change, ready to give her “more blush kisses.”
The Armani ambassador said, “I keep a lot of[cheek tint]on my hands and have a brush handy.” “It’s crazy there. It’s like Formula 1 where everyone gets off at the pit stop and starts running.

As for the lips, the pair “didn’t want to go too maubey this time,” but they still wanted a look that would last for hours. Gonzalez ultimately decided to mix Shade 13, a beautiful brick-red cheek, with the matching Lip Power lipstick.
“Mattes are always good for the stage, especially when it’s windy, because gloss can get your hair caught,” she explained.

back to basics

Gonzalez “always” starts Carpenter’s look with Armani Luminous Silk Foundation for a natural finish inspired by icons from a bygone era.
“Look at Jane Birkin, look at Catherine Deneuve… everything was more raw,” she said. “That’s where I wanted to leave it. Just like a nice, beautiful, sophisticated version of it, that’s the Armani way.”
“It’s not going to look like Instagram makeup in 2020,” she quipped. “It gives you a sense of European aesthetics.”

It’s in my eyes

Do you have your eye on Carpenter’s shimmering shadows? She chose a combination of four different Armani Beauty Eye Tint shades. 25M and 30M on the eyelids, 67S on the inner corner of the eye, and 99M instead of eyeliner. (No wonder Gonzalez calls liquid milk “very important” to his process.)
“For the sub, I like to make her eyes big and doll-like,” she said. “She looks like a kitten. She has cat-like features.”

set yourself up for success

Carpenter’s set included plenty of sweaty dance moves, not to mention moving fountains, so Gonzalez applied plenty of Luminous Glow Setting Powder.
“The product is really luxurious and high quality and performs well,” she said, noting that Carpenter somehow “looked even better” after being in the water.

But in the end, it may have been Gonzalez who needed more waterproof products.
“I was already in tears when I saw (the set) being unfinished through rehearsals and such,” she said.
“I always tell her, ‘I’m so proud of you. I look at you and I know how hard you work. I’m always in awe of you.’
