Beef creator Lee Sung-jin says it’s an honor to work on the script for the X-Men reboot

“Beef” creator Lee Sung-jin has agreed without hesitation to work on the latest script for the upcoming “X-Men” reboot.

“You have to say yes, no matter how bad it goes,” he told me Wednesday night at the season 2 premiere of “Beef” in Hollywood.

Director Jake Schreier, who is set to reboot the X-Men for the MCU, recently told Collider that Lee and The Bear co-showrunner and Beef creator Joanna Caro have agreed to the latest draft of the upcoming superhero adventure.

“I have fond memories of waking up on Saturday mornings with my dad and watching the X-Men cartoon and reading comics,” Lee said.

He said one of his favorite mutants is Gambit. “I love Jubilee,” Lee said. “You know, everyone looks up to Cyclops or Wolverine, but I’ve always loved supporting member stuff since I was a kid. But this is very early days. This doesn’t mean anything is going on. This is just to say that I’m a big, big fan of the comics, and it’s a huge honor to play a small role in it.”

The X-Men will be reunited in the MCU with Schreier, Lee and Caro for the first time since last year’s Thunderbolts.

“Beef” executive producer and director Jake Schreier was nervous not to say too much — he wouldn’t even name his favorite mutant — but he did talk about working with Lee and Caro again. “I’ve been working on so many things with Sonny[Lee]and Joanna,” he said. “It always seems like a good thing when you can work with people that you really care about and are really talented at their craft, and you can quickly create something together and keep doing it.”

‘Beef’ Season 2 features an all-new cast and storyline, starring Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac as a couple whose marriage is falling apart.

Lee said of Season 2, “For some reason, the amount of work has increased exponentially. We have more characters to look forward to, less time to develop, and I think we tried to raise the bar and try to do something different with our second album. It took a lot of everyone’s blood, sweat, and tears, but I’m excited to finally get it out.”

The final cut of the episode was released just last week. “Everyone was so angry at me,” Lee said with a laugh. “If it wasn’t for the deadline, I don’t think this show would even be watched because we’re always tinkering and always trying to make it better.”

The fights and arguments between Mulligan and Isaac’s characters are brutal, and the two say very mean things to each other.

When asked about not bringing home any meanness at the end of a day of filming, Isaac joked, “Just drink a lot, food, all kinds of food.” “Drink a Bufo and just relax.” Mulligan added, “There’s something cathartic about destroying a trophy cabinet. Let me tell you, it didn’t bother me.”

“Beef” season 2 will premiere on Netflix on April 16th.
