Jeff Shell’s legal team is in preliminary negotiations with Paramount Skydance regarding a possible exit from the media giant, where he currently serves as president. If Mr. Shell remains with the company, he will likely move into a different, more advisory role, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
The negotiations come amid a messy legal battle in which Shell was sued by professional gambler RJ Cipriani on March 9, who claims it owes Crisis Communications Services $150 million. Mr. Cipriani’s lawsuit also alleges that Shell shared confidential information with Mr. Cipriani about Paramount Skydance, including Shell’s belief that Paramount was overpaying Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount has a deal to buy Warner Bros. Discovery for $111 billion. The transaction is pending regulatory approval. Shell was originally scheduled to remain on the board until the transaction was completed, but that appears to have been moved forward.
A final decision on Shell’s position at the company will not be made until an internal investigation into Shell’s involvement with Cipriani is completed in the coming weeks.
Spokespeople for Shell and Paramount declined to comment.
Shell has filed a counterclaim, accusing Cipriani of attempting to blackmail and defame him by creating “an entirely false story that Shell disclosed confidential information about Paramount’s business.” Shell’s counterclaim states: “Shell owes nothing to Cipriani and brings these counterclaims to seek redress for the damages he has suffered as a result of Cipriani’s persistent and malicious campaign of extortion and defamation. Shell further expressly reserves the right to supplement these counterclaims in order to seek full compensation and recourse against Cipriani and his agents for knowingly participating in Cipriani’s defamatory and extortionist scheme.”
Shell has a reputation as a shrewd media executive. However, he sometimes clashed with other members of Paramount’s leadership team, who found his style offensive, sources told Variety.
Shell was hired by Paramount in July 2024 after David Ellison’s Skydance Media acquired Legacy Studios for $8 billion. Previously, Mr. Shell served as CEO of NBCUniversal from 2019 to 2023. Shell was fired by the studio’s parent company, Comcast, in April 2023 after an internal investigation found that he had an “inappropriate” relationship with an employee who had accused Shell of sexual harassment and gender discrimination.
Pack initially reported that Shell’s lawyers had begun talking with Paramount about a possible exit.
