Donald Glover, who plays Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy Movie, “campaigned to get the role,” according to co-star Jack Black.
Black, who will reprise his Bowser voice role in Universal Pictures’ animated sequel, told ExtraTV: “It’s kind of nice. We were lucky to get Brie[Larson]who loves the Nintendo world, and we also had Donald who campaigned for the role. He told his agent, ‘Call[Illumination CEO]Chris Meledandri and tell him you really want to be Yoshi and be in the new Super Mario.’ Brother, “because he loves it and loves the world.”
Glover told ExtraTV that he was “a little bit timid” when he first took on the role. “It was like, ‘Okay, how do we do this? These guys did such a great job in the first movie,'” he said, “and then… That’s a difficult thing to do. It’s a very iconic movie and character. I’ve always believed in the idea of underpromising and not over-delivering, and was like, ‘Just study hard and hope it works out.’ I will be loved like them. ”
In addition to Glover and Black, the film’s star-studded cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Luis Guzman as Wart.
