Jamie Dornan took over hosting duties from Tina Fey on the second episode of SNL UK and turned the monologue weirdness dial up a few notches.
The Irish actor introduced himself as “the star of The Fall, the Oscar-winning film Belfast, and of course your aunt’s favorite dream dream” before revealing a slightly bizarre and apparently completely true fact about himself.
“Not only am I a sex symbol who looks sexy in everything I do, but I’m also a guy who collects rocks.”
It’s like a potato,” he said.
Dornan then wheeled around a trolley with five such spud-shaped stones, picking up and admiring each one (including one that looked “just like a chip”).
“Look at these gorgeous little things. And no, this isn’t a joke. God knows, I hope so,” he said, encouraging people to Google “Jamie Dornan Potato Rocks” to prove he was “telling the truth” (a quick search proved he was).
“Seriously, do you want this person to sleep with you?”
Fey’s first SNL UK monologue was interrupted by celebrity guests including Nicola Coughlan, Michael Cera and Graham Norton, while Dornan’s was interrupted by fellow Irishman Chris O’Dowd.
“Yes, that’s me, your greatest enemy and personal friend,” he said. “I couldn’t help but think I was showing off my spudlocks again.”
O’Dowd then takes out his stone and reveals that he has replaced one of Dornan’s collection with a real potato, which he reveals is “not even Irish!”
Irish jokes on “SNL UK” first appeared in the opening episode with George Fouracre’s musical skit “What kind of Irish is your grandpa?” and continued into the next skit in episode two, which also featured Dornan and a song about the tendency of British holidaymakers to spend time only in Anglo-Irish-themed pubs.
