If you’re wondering why Leonardo DiCaprio wore a mustache at the 2026 Oscars, the first time you watch Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night will give you your answer. This haunted marriage drama is likely to send the Oscar-winning filmmaker back into his “Shutter Island” psychological horror mode. DiCaprio will headline the film, reuniting with his Don’t Look Up co-star Jennifer Lawrence.
DiCaprio and Scorsese jointly shared a first look photo of What Happens at Night on social media. The image shows couple DiCaprio and Lawrence walking hand in hand in a cold winter landscape. The film is currently in production. The supporting cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris.
“It Happened at Night” is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Cameron. The story centers on an American couple who travel to a small town in Europe to adopt a baby. According to the book’s synopsis, “In this mysterious, frozen world, nothing is as it seems. The more a couple struggles to have a baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”
DiCaprio has enjoyed a storied career with Scorsese, having directed films such as The Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island, but this new film marks the first time that Taxi Driver and Goodfellas icon Jennifer Lawrence has directed the film. During a conversation on Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” Lawrence asked DiCaprio what people should know about Scorsese as a director.
“That’s great. He’ll have a lot of references for the movie,” DiCaprio told her. “They usually come in the form of a DVD. If you don’t have a DVD player, buy a DVD player. Sometimes he’ll just show one sequence of the movie. If there’s an older movie or something he wants you to capture from the pace, he might just show the whole movie just the specific scene he wants to see. For reference, we might watch some Japanese ghost movies to get the feel. We’ll have a great time.”
“What Happens at Night” is produced by Apple, which also directed Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The release date has not been decided yet.
