In today’s cover story segment of the Daily Variety podcast, Variety’s Matt Donnelly details his sit-down with Nicole Kidman in Nashville for Variety’s pre-Oscar issue, published today in print and online. Kidman reflects on the whirlwind experience of winning Best Actress for The Hours in 2003.
Donnelly’s cover story portrays Kidman as thriving after a period in which she was “in a shell” following her divorce from country star Keith Urban last year. Kidman is known for never stopping working, whether acting or producing. Her 2026 schedule includes the Peacock series Scarpetta and a sequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic, which reunites her with Sandra Bullock. She is also filming season 3 of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series “Lioness.”
“I think[Kidman]really eats, sleeps, and breathes what she does. She expressed to me that she’s been on a journey of the human spirit throughout her career since she was 14 years old, always busy with work and film and television, and now producing her own work,” Donnelly observes.
“I think she’s come to a point where she’s truly grateful for the good fortune she’s had and is able to adjust her life differently for the future. She’s 58 years old, which is a very unusual age for a woman as active in Hollywood as she is. In some ways, she’s at the top of her craft like never before. It’s been a tough year, she admitted, but she’s ready to emerge. This year has a lot in store for her and more.” “It’s not only ‘Scarpetta,’ but also the long-awaited 30-year-old sequel to ‘Practical Magic,’ in which director Suzanne Bier reunited with Sandra Bullock,” he says.
