The historical drama “King’s Watcher” continued its historic success at the Korean box office, surpassing the milestone of 11 million viewers on the weekend of March 6th to 8th.
According to data from KOBIS, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council, the film maintained an overwhelming revenue share of 80.27%, showing little sign of slowing down even in its second month of release.
“The King’s Warden” grossed $11.3 million over the three-day weekend from 1,725,766 attendees. The film, directed by Jang Han-joon and starring Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, centers on the bond between the village chief and the exiled teenage King Danjong. Since its debut on February 4, the title has amassed a total of $74.3 million from 11,503,742 admissions, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon.
Pixar’s animated adventure “Hoppers” rose to No. 2 overall in its first weekend of wide release, earning $1.5 million from 233,822 admissions. Since its mid-week release on March 4, the film has grossed $2 million at the box office.
In third place was the spy thriller “Humint,” which earned $309,274 over the weekend. The movie, directed by Ryu Seung-wan and starring Zo In-sung and Park Jung-min, attracted 1,932,209 viewers and grossed a total of $13 million.
Local comedy-drama “The Mad Dance Office” debuted at No. 4 with $90,442 over the weekend. Directed by Cho Hyun-jin, the film stars Yeom Hye-ran as Guk-hee, a methodical district office manager who has lived a perfectly planned and orderly life. Gook-hee’s carefully planned world begins to fall apart when her daughter suddenly becomes unreachable. She stumbles into a flamenco studio, where she rediscovers the rhythm of her life through the unfamiliar dance rhythm and the support of her subordinate Yeon-kyung (Choi Sung-woong). Since its release on March 4, the film has grossed $162,421.
The music drama “God’s Choir” came in fifth place, adding $71,752 to its total of $9 million. Next was the Chinese animated sequel “Ne Zha 2” in sixth place with $38,677 for a total of $321,010. “Hamnet” came in seventh place with $56,097, for a total of $286,795.
“The Bride!” debuted at No. 8 and earned $60,728 over the weekend. Since its release on March 4, it has grossed $134,131. Rounding out the top 10 was the live-action remake of “Five Centimeters Per Second” in ninth place with $45,866 ($513,267 total), and Norwegian drama “Sentimental Value” in 10th place with $39,765 ($332,571 total).
The overall market total for the weekend was $14.2 million, slightly lower than last week’s $14.4 million.
