ABC announced Wednesday that “Abbott Elementary” has been renewed for a sixth season.
The news comes on the same day the show returns for Season 5, with new episodes set to air tonight at 8:30pm ET on the broadcast network. Season 5 originally premiered on October 1st.
“Abbott Elementary” has become a cornerstone of ABC’s primetime scripted lineup, and the show remains highly popular long after it goes off the air. It’s also one of the only pure comedies ABC currently airs, along with Tim Allen and Kat Dennings’ multi-cam “Shifting Gears” and the recently launched revival of “Scrubs.” “Abbott Elementary” has been nominated for 30 Emmy Awards and won four times.
Series creator Quinta Branson will join the show alongside Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter, William Stanford Davis and Emmy Award winner Sheryl Lee Ralph.
The show’s official logline reads:
“In this workplace comedy, a group of dedicated, passionate teachers and a slightly tone-deaf principal come together in Philadelphia’s public schools, determined to help their students succeed in life despite the odds. These incredible educators may be outnumbered and underfunded, but they love their jobs, even if they don’t like the district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating their children.”
In addition to starring in and producing the series, Branson also serves as executive producer along with Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacher, Randall Einhorn and Brian Rubenstein of Delicious Non-Sexual Productions. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television.
