David Jaffe, the creator of the “God of War” video game, appeared on his YouTube channel on Saturday to slam the first look images of Amazon Prime’s upcoming “God of War” TV show. He said the frame, which depicts series hero Kratos in a forest with his son, is “very bad in many ways.”
“I think everyone is trying really hard, (but) it’s really stupid,” Jaffe said. “But let me be incredibly clear, okay? Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It’s very bad in so many ways, but we’ll get to that in a moment. And Ron Moore is great, who is the showrunner… This guy is a standout among his talented peers. I have no doubt at all that it’s going to be a good show.”
Jaffe added that he doesn’t care that star Ryan Hurst isn’t a huge supporter of Kratos, but instead takes issue with his facial expressions and poses, which he described as “stupid shitty images.”
“Kratos has this expression in this pose, not the man’s face. It just looks stupid,” Jaffe explained. “You’re going to be giving most people a first look at a brand new character that you’re hoping will carry your series, and they’ve never really seen them before, and this is how you’re going to introduce them?”
“Maybe it’s conscious. Maybe they’re thinking, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the story of a father and son. And if we focus on a figure like him, a Spartan wrath, maybe people will be like, ‘I don’t want to watch that show.’ Well, maybe. But at that point, can you find a photo of him that doesn’t look like he’s pooping in the woods? Because that’s what the photo looks like. ”
Amazon Prime released the first look photos on February 27th. In addition to Hearst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son, other cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Dari Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gurka as brothers Bullock and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Balder.
