“The King’s Warden” controls 82% market share

The historical drama “King’s Watcher” maintained its top spot at the Korean box office during the weekend from February 27th to March. 1. According to data from KOBIS, a tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. The film garnered a commanding 82.01% of the total revenue share, the highest market share since its release.

“The King’s Warden” grossed $11.80 over the three-day weekend with 1,750,991 admissions. The drama, directed by Jang Han-joon and starring Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, tells the story of a village chief protecting an abdicated teenage king, and the drama had 8,484,426 viewers and a total box office revenue of $56 million. The film’s box office performance reflects strong growth as it approaches the 10 million attendance milestone.

In second place was the spy thriller HUMINT, which earned $895,678 from 124,622 admissions. The film, directed by Ryu Seung-wan and starring Zo In-sung and Park Jung-min, has attracted 1,822,175 viewers since its release on February 11, and has grossed a total of $12.6 million.

The live-action remake of the Japanese anime “5 Centimeters Per Second” debuted at No. 3, earning $217,036 over the weekend and $383,843 since its Feb. 25 release. Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama and starring Hokuto Matsumura, the film is an expanded two-hour version of Makoto Shinkai’s 2007 omnibus. The film tells the story of two childhood friends, Takaki and Akari, who struggle to maintain their bond over 18 years, even as they move to different cities and become estranged.

The musical drama “Choir of God” finished in fourth place over the weekend, adding $154,128 for a total of $9 million. Pixar’s “Hoppers” debuted in fifth place with $160,374. It has grossed $167,647 since its mid-week opening on February 25th. Horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple opened in sixth place with 21,373 admissions and $156,922 at the box office.

In seventh place was Chinese hit anime Ne Zha 2, which earned $123,414 over the weekend. Since its release on February 25th, it has grossed $215,654. “Hamnet” debuted at No. 8 with $78,955 for a total of $166,711.

Rounding out the top 10, omnibus horror “App the Horror” came in 9th place with $76,043 (total $604,646), and fantasy drama “Number One” came in 10th with $70,207 (total $1.7 million).

The weekend’s total market total was $14.4 million, up from $13 million last week.
