Ryan Coogler just made history.

At the 32nd Annual Actor Awards (formerly known as the SAG Awards), Warner Bros.’ vampire historical drama “Sinners” won the Best Cast Ensemble Award. Coogler’s film marks his second win in this category, making him the first director to win two Best Ensemble awards in the award’s history.

“We are all anointed to be a part of this incredible journey created by the genius Ryan Coogler,” Delroy Lindo said from the stage with the rest of the cast. “We brought ourselves. We brought our hearts, our souls. We brought our spirit to this effort and to be recognized by all of you… Gratitude is far from encompassing what we feel, gratitude,” Lind said, and Warner Bros. acknowledged. Michael De Luca, Pam Abdi, Suzanne Fritz.

The award-winning ensemble for “Sinners” includes Michael B. Jordan, who also won Best Actor, as well as Lindor, Wunmi Mosaku, Hailee Steinfeld, Myles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Omar Miller and Buddy Guy. The group beat out “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” and “One Battle After Another.”

Coogler previously won for Black Panther (2018), which later made Oscar history as the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. “Sinners” is currently holding its own in the record books, leading this year’s Academy Awards field with a record-breaking 16 nominations, ahead of “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La La Land,” which each received 14 nominations.

Jordan’s victory also added another milestone. With “Sinners” joining “Black Panther” on his resume, he won two cast ensemble trophies, making him one of a group of 18 performers to win twice, including names like Ben Affleck, Colin Firth, Allison Janney and Emma Stone. The current leader continues to be Michael Keaton, the only actor who has participated in three cast and ensemble winners: Birdman (2014), Spotlight (2015), and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020). Among them, “Birdman” and “Spotlight” won the Oscar for Best Picture. Jordan is the second black male actor and third black actor to make the list, joining Don Cheadle (Traffic, Crash) and Octavia Spencer (The Help, Hidden Figures).

How that momentum will be reflected in the Oscars remains an open question. Since the Best Picture lineup was expanded in 2009, the cast and ensemble winner for Best Actor has tied the Academy Award for Best Picture winner eight times, exactly half of the previous 16 years. Overlapping works include The King’s Speech (2010), Argo (2012), Birdman (2014), Spotlight (2015), Parasite (2019), CODA (2021), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), and Oppenheimer (2023). year).

Final voting for the Oscars is currently underway, starting Thursday, February 26th and running through Thursday, March 5th. The 98th Oscar Awards will be held on March 15th and will be hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast on ABC.
