Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for the second time in his career for his portrayal of twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the supernatural thriller Sinners.
Jordan won the trophy for Best Ensemble in 2019 for “Black Panther.” Shortly after taking the stage, he returned as the same ensemble award winner at this year’s “Sinners” awards ceremony.
Jordan was nominated for the Actor of the Year award, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Award, along with Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”) and Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”).
“I’m so honored and honored to be nominated in the People, Actors and Humans category that I love,” Jordan said. “I love their work and what you guys have contributed to our technology. This ride has been incredible. So thank you for making me feel welcome and making me feel seen.”
Sinners marks the fifth collaboration between Jordan and director Ryan Coogler, following Fruitvale Station, Creed and the two Black Panther films. Jordan pulls double duty in the 1930s-set Sinners, playing identical twins Smoke and Stack. After World War I, he returns to his hometown in the South and opens a juke joint, only to find that his small town is attacked by vampires. The film received a record 16 Oscar nominations, including five nominations for Best Actor. In addition to numerous award accolades, “Sinners” grossed $369 million worldwide.
“Thank you, Ryan Coogler, for giving me the opportunity to show what I can do and create a safe space for me to find my truth without fear,” Jordan concluded before giving a shout out to his co-stars. “Thank you for letting me do the best job I can. Just being in this room right now with the people who have watched me grow in front of the camera and in this room…and feel the love and support you’ve always given me and encouraged me to do my best. Well, it’s pretty amazing.”
