Cate Blanchett revisits the mythical village of Berk. The two-time Oscar winner will star as Valka in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2, reprising the role she voiced in the original animated trilogy.
How to Train Your Dragon depicts the teenage adventures of a skinny sociopath named Hiccup. Hiccup befriends a wounded dragon he calls Toothless. This bond goes against a centuries-old tradition in which Vikings and dragons have long been enemies. The sequel is set five years in the future, and depicts 20-year-old Hiccup and his friends meeting Valka, Hiccup’s estranged mother, and fighting a madman who is leading an army of dragons to conquer the world. Blanchett will star in How to Train Your Dragon 2 alongside Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trewaldwyn.
Dean DeBlois is writing and directing the sequel, having previously directed the $1.6 billion animated trilogy 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. He also directed the 2025 live-action remake, which grossed $646 million worldwide, making it the fourth-highest grossing Hollywood film of the year.
Universal and DreamWorks plan to release the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon 2 in theaters on June 11, 2027. As of the current release date, How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released one week after Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Blanchett’s casting.
