The UK home entertainment sector hit a record high of £5.7 billion ($7.6 billion) in 2025, a 10% increase on the previous year, according to new data released by the British Screen Entertainment Association in partnership with the Official Charts Company on Tuesday.
This record figure includes sales of streaming services, digital transactions and physical media, taking the overall size of the UK media and entertainment industry to $45.6 billion, up 8% from $40.2 billion in 2024.
Universal’s “Wicked” emerged as the year’s top home entertainment title, grossing $23.7 million in sales and rentals across all formats, according to Official Charts Company data. The musical version, starring British actors Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey, was filmed in the UK and grossed $82 million at the UK box office in 2024. Its sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” grossed $62 million in theatrical release in 2025, ahead of its home entertainment release on January 2nd.
British talent dominated this year’s top five home entertainment titles. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, whose major battle scenes were filmed in the UK, secured second place with $9.5 million in sales and rentals. Conclave, a papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes based on the novel by Robert Harris, topped the rental charts with around $5.4 million and won Best British Film at the 2025 BAFTAs.
“Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” produced by Working Title, directed by Michael Morris with a predominantly British cast, came in fourth with $9.9 million. Jurassic World: Rebirth, directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Jonathan Bailey, rounded out the top five with a home entertainment gross of $8.2 million, followed by a theatrical gross of $48.7 million.
BASE chief executive Liz Bales said: “The UK entertainment industry will continue to be a globally admired powerhouse of outstanding talent and innovation in 2025.” “The strength of the UK entertainment industry is reinforced by the prevalence of a range of streaming services, as well as the diversity of channels and choice for consumers who flock to buy and rent an increasing number of options.”
Digital markets showed particular strength, with the total digital sales market increasing 4.5% to $328.3 million. Digital purchases increased by 7.4% and the rental market increased by 1.7% to $183.6 million. Premium video-on-demand releases have also expanded, with 79 titles released at the higher end of theatrical release in 2025 (compared to 62 titles in 2024).
Physical media maintained its appeal to both collectors and mainstream audiences. Warner Bros. Pictures’ Superman (2025) topped the Blu-ray chart, contributing to a 3.2% increase in overall value for the format. Downton Abbey: The Finale sold 56,500 DVD units (valued at $761,120) in just two weeks after its release on December 15th, securing the No. 3 spot on the Official Year-End DVD Chart.
Classic titles continued to perform well, with the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy selling 13,800 units for $1.1 million, and holiday favorites “Elf” and “Polar Express” selling 120,100 and 77,500 units, respectively, in the final week of 2025.
Streaming remains the leading viewing option, with 20.5 million UK households subscribing to at least one service, representing 69.5% of the population. Netflix topped the list in fall 2025 with 17.6 million subscribers, fueled by titles such as the award-winning “Adolescence” and the animated series “KPop Demon Hunters.” Prime Video reached 13.6 million households, Disney+ reached 7.5 million households and Paramount+ reached 3.5 million households. Smaller platforms also recorded increases, with Discovery growing to 3.2 million households, Apple TV to 2.8 million households and Sky’s Now to 2 million households.
According to BASE, the introduction of ad-supported tiers across major streaming platforms has contributed to the overall value increase in the sector.
HBO’s “House of the Dragon” dominated TV sales for the third year in a row, while “Doctor Who: The Savages,” which first aired in 1966, took second place, demonstrating continued demand for classic TV content on physical media.
UK box office revenue rose 1% in 2025, with Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Minecraft Movie leading the theatrical box office with $76.9 million and taking sixth place in home entertainment with $10.1 million in sales and rentals.
BASE plans to release comprehensive market data and analysis later this month.
