What you need to know

OnlyFans model Sophie Lane shares her thoughts after a Republican candidate for Florida governor proposes a “sin tax” to punish adult models Candidate James Fishback says a “sin tax” would take half of OnlyFans creators’ income and use it to fund public education, claiming it would “discourage and deter action” Lane, 21, tells PEOPLE. Did you commit a crime? ”

OnlyFans founder Sophie Rain is speaking out after a Republican Florida gubernatorial candidate proposed a 50% “sin tax” on all OnlyFans revenue in the state.

James Fishbach, a gubernatorial candidate who is trailing in Florida’s 2026 Republican primary, said he wants to impose higher income taxes on OnlyFans creators to help improve the public school system.

“It’s called a ‘sin tax’ because it’s first and foremost a sin, but the purpose of a sin tax in economics is to inhibit and deter certain behaviors,” Fishback told NXR Studio, calling OnlyFans an “online decadent platform.”

“And as the Governor of Florida, I don’t want young women who could be raising families and mothers of their children to sell their bodies online to sick people. And I don’t want young women who could be raising families and raising children to sell their bodies to sick people online. And I don’t want young, impressionable men who have turned away from Christ, away from our Lord and Savior, to be talked into, lured into lust, and have their entire brains rewired.”

In an exclusive statement shared with PEOPLE, Lane called Fishbach’s proposal “the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” adding, “How do you impose a sin tax on Christians who have not sinned?”

“No one forced me to start OnlyFans. It was my decision. So I don’t have to tell a 31-year-old man he can’t sell his body online,” she says. “I’m a Christian. I know God knows what I’m doing and I know He’s happy with me. That’s the only confirmation I need.”

Lane, who accused Fishback of being “exploited” by OnlyFans in his X post, claimed that Fishback believes the bill is “the first of its kind,” but that “if it reaches the Senate floor, it will be the ‘last bill of its kind.'” ”

“It’s honestly sad when you think about the fact that he’s paying attention to me because he needs the attention he’s getting at this point,” she added. “He’s first accusing me of what I’m doing, but at the same time he’s picking me out of the pack to start some kind of viral beef, so yeah, no, I don’t think so. He thinks he can go after the biggest thing, but let’s see what it does to him.”

Lane, 21, also raises questions about who Fishbach’s bill targets.

“And why would you tax creators but not subscribers?! By that logic, this doesn’t make sense,” she says. “Florida is the epicenter of OnlyFans. What’s the point of just kicking them out of the state? It’s wrong for Mr. Fishbach to try to go after people who work hard for their money just because he himself opposes it. It also seems unconstitutional.”

Fishback, who is far behind Florida Rep. Byron Donald in Republican primary polls, claims his “sin tax” will raise $200 million in revenue that will help raise wages for public school teachers and improve the quality of school meals, Fishback, a fourth-generation Floridian, told X.

Because OnlyFans creators are independent contractors and must file their own taxes, “a 50% lien at the state level is administratively complicated,” the Independent Business Times reported.

According to the report, Fishbach has not yet released a draft of the bill or explained how it will be implemented.

PEOPLE has reached out to Fishback for comment.
