All about the late Grateful Dead guitarist’s wife and children

Bob Weir left a lasting legacy for his family.

He met Natasha Münter, guitarist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, at a show when she was a teenager and he was in his mid-30s. Although they remained friends for years, their relationship eventually turned romantic and they welcomed their first child, Shara Monet, in 1997.

More than a year after their daughter was born, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on a cul-de-sac in Mill Valley, California, according to SFGATE. The Grammy Award-winning guitarist welcomed another daughter, Chloe Kaelia, with his wife in 2001.

Shara, known as Monet, said on Live for Live Music in 2018 that she was grateful for growing up following her parents’ “hippie values.” Her father was a true rock star who passionately believed in a holistic way of living and was deeply committed to making an impact on society.

“I think that was really good for me,” she explained. “I don’t care so much about material things, I’m more in touch with myself. It’s not necessarily spirituality, but it’s about being more mindful. I’m more involved in things that aren’t materialistic. I grew up vegetarian. I grew up doing yoga. I help animals.”

Bob’s team announced his death on January 10th. He passed away at the age of 78. According to a post on his official Instagram account, Bob was diagnosed with cancer in July 2025, and after “couragingly overcoming cancer,” he “passed away from underlying lung problems.”

“He made a peaceful transition surrounded by his loved ones,” the caption reads, along with a photo taken by Khloe. “His loving family, Natasha, Monet and Chloe, request privacy at this difficult time and would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love, support and condolences.”

Bob met Natasha at a Grateful Dead show

According to CNN, the legendary guitarist met his wife at a Grateful Dead concert, according to the 2014 documentary The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir. She was 15 years old at the time and would sneak backstage after shows.

Bob, who was in his 30s when they met, insisted in the documentary that their relationship was platonic until after frontman Jerry Garcia died in 1995. He said he was “approaching 50 years old” and thought he “couldn’t expect to age gracefully like a rock’n’roll tomcat.”

Natasha and Bob were married on July 15, 1999. SFGATE reported that the ceremony was held in a Mill Valley cul-de-sac near the Grammy-winning guitarist’s home, and Natasha wore a kilt. Mone gathered at the altar with her parents, and band members Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart also attended.

Bob’s longtime songwriting collaborator, John Perry Barlow, was his chaperone.

Bob and Natasha have two daughters

The couple had two daughters during their 26 years of marriage. Monet was born on December 19, 1997, and Chloe was born four years later on October 9, 2001. Bob, who has lived a typical rock and roll lifestyle for years, joked that it was especially fitting to be the father of a girl.

“When my oldest daughter popped out, I was told three words: ‘Karma, karma, karma,'” he told Vanity Fair in April 2014. “That was the first thing everyone said.”

Monet told Live for Live Music that she accompanied her father on tour until she was “about 10 or 11” and was unable to take time off from school.

“Some of my friends I took on tour with me had trouble sleeping on the rocking bus, but the bus actually made me sleepy,” she recalled, adding, “It’s always fun and energizing to watch my dad play.”

natasha is an activist

Like her husband, Natasha is also a vocal supporter of causes that are important to her. In October 2021, she shared a photo with the Grateful Dead founder on Instagram protesting women’s reproductive rights in Texas.

Bob has a long history of social impact efforts, including serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program, supporting the voter registration nonprofit HeadCount, and co-founding the Fatur Foundation, which funds environmental, social, and cultural causes.

Monet is an actress

Monet works as an actress and has appeared in several short films and the 2025 film Portal to Hell. While Monet has pursued a career on screen, she also inherited her love of music from her father, even convincing him to attend Coachella with friends in 2018.

Bob later told Live for Live Music that experiencing artists like The Weeknd, Post Malone, and HAIM with his daughter was “pretty magical.”

“Having children allows you to see the world anew with new eyes as you grow up,” the musician said. “I’m much older now.”

he continued. “Again, this was one of those experiences where I was able to feel and experience the music with someone with a fresher mindset. Whereas I was critical of this or that of their work or presentation and wasn’t as open to accepting the whole experience as a whole. She let me do that, which was nice and good for me.”

Monet also loved singing since childhood and played in a band during high school. But it was more of a hobby for her, and she said she has since become more interested in performance art. Monet studied strategic communication and corporate communication at university.

chloe is a photographer

Bob’s daughter Chloe made a name for herself as a live music photographer, often photographing guitarists’ shows. In 2024, she told Rolling Stone that she recorded Dead & Company’s residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas and didn’t miss a single song.

“I love documenting what incredible Deadheads are doing. It’s really cool,” she told the outlet in August 2024. “I’m on the go all the time. I love soaking up every minute.”

Chloe got her first camera at the age of 7 and also shot the cover of Bob’s 2016 album Blue Mountain when she was 14. She became Dead and Company’s official photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic when Dead and Company needed people in their “bubble.”

“My dad is really supportive and I love that I get to do what I love while he does what he loves,” she said. “At the end of the day, we’re going to be working together.”
