Prague-based sales agency Philmotor has secured international sales rights to Ukrainian filmmaker Dmytro Suhoritsky-Sobchuk’s documentary Silent Flood ahead of its world premiere at IDFA’s international competition.
The film focuses on a religious community based in a beautiful river canyon in western Ukraine. It is a sunny village where you can hear the laughter of children from large families. However, the peaceful life of this community is frequently destroyed by floods and wars. Both are relentless forces that take lives. Communities come together to overcome flood damage. Just as wars reshape countries, floods transform the lives of communities.
Together with our community, we observe changes as current wars intertwine with those of the past, but the sense of home will never be taken away from anyone.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the invisible connections between people and the places they live,” said Suhoritsky-Sobchuk. “ “Silent Flood” was born from that fascination. It is a remote riverside community that lives in deep harmony with nature, yet is always at the mercy of its forces. I first discovered this hidden village many years ago while exploring the river, and it felt like I was transported back to my own childhood, a time that had somehow stopped. The people there welcomed me so generously and sincerely that I kept coming back. Their world, formed by floods and now by war, reflects how fragile and fragile it is. The cyclical nature of life reminds us that nothing is truly untouched. ”
“We were drawn to the subtle allegory behind the story and have been following the Silent Flood project since 2022 during its development, and the result has far exceeded our expectations: a fascinating cinematic feast with a unique storyline and pace,” said Petar Mitric of Filmor.
The film was produced by Karina Kostina and Eugene Rachkovsky at Tabor in Ukraine and co-produced by Tanya Georgieva-Waldhauer at Elemag Pictures in Germany. MDR Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk is also co-producing in collaboration with Arte.
Suhoritsky-Sopchuk’s first feature film, Pamfir, was developed by Torino Film Lab, Midpoint and Cinefondation Residence and was selected for the 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. The film was nominated for the European Discovery category at the European Film Awards.
