Diane Keaton’s son Duke paid tribute to the late actress in his first outing since her shocking death.
The 25-year-old was spotted leaving his Los Angeles home wearing all black on Sunday, the day after his late mother passed away. He accessorized with two silver cross necklaces that reflected his mother’s signature “devoted nun” style.
The “First Wives Club” star’s iconic style almost always included pants and a blazer, paired with sunglasses, a hat, a funky tie, and a belt. She also wore multiple stacked crosses, a signature look she introduced in the 1990s.
Hollywood was left speechless over the weekend when a spokesperson for Keaton’s family announced that Keaton had died on Saturday at the age of 79.
Keaton’s cause of death is unknown, but sources told People magazine that her health had rapidly deteriorated in recent months.
“In her final months, she was surrounded by only her closest family, who chose to keep things private,” the source said. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was going on.”
But friends of the “Father of the Bride” actress knew something was wrong when she listed her Los Angeles “dream home” for $29 million.
Sources also told the publication that Keaton, who is known for walking her dog daily in the Brentwood area, has not been seen in recent months.
“She loved her community,” the source said. “Just a few months ago, she walked her dog every day. No matter the weather, she always wore the same outfit, with a hat and her signature sunglasses.”
Longtime friend Carol Bayer Sager told People magazine that she was shocked by how weak she looked “a few weeks” before her death.
“She was so skinny,” said the songwriter who co-wrote Keaton’s single “First Christmas.”
“She had to go to Palm Springs. The inside of her house was damaged (from the Palisades wildfire) and they had to clean everything out. She was there for a while and when she came back, I was kind of surprised by her weight loss.”
The “Annie Hall” actress leaves behind two children, Duke and Dexter, 29, both of whom she adopted in her 50s.
“Becoming a mother was not an irresistible urge for me,” she previously told Ladies Home Journal about her decision to adopt as a single mother. “It sounded like an idea I’d had for a long time, so I jumped in.”
“I wasn’t ready to be a mother,” she explained of her decision to adopt later in life.
The Oscar-winning actress also famously dated Al Pacino (who has said not marrying Keaton was one of her biggest regrets) Warren Beatty and her Annie Hall director Woody Allen, but they never married.
“I think I’m the only woman of my generation, and maybe even before, to have been single my entire life,” she told People magazine in 2019 about her decision to forego marriage, explaining that “getting married just wasn’t a good idea for me.”
She also said that she was never interested in the role of a wife, saying, “I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, “One day you’ll make a good wife.”
“And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’ I’m so glad I didn’t do that, and I’m sure they’re glad, too,” she said, referring to her famous former partners.
