Jon M. Chu releases new ‘Wicked 2’ clip, no digital effects for Tin Man

The “Wicked” sequel “For Good” may not be released in theaters until Nov. 21, but director Jon M. Chu stopped by the BFI London Film Festival on Friday to offer a special sneak peek of the sequel to Universal’s hit musical adaptation.

The director released an all-new clip for the LFF for Free talk audience, featuring Elphaba visiting Glinda on her wedding day. The emotional tease saw the two secretly reunite after the events of “Defying Gravity,” with Glinda donning a sparkling white gown as Elphaba is chased by the wizard’s flying monkeys. A tearful Glinda begs Elphaba to speak with the wizard, but Elphaba leaves before she can finish her plea.

Chu also revealed that no digital effects were used for the Tin Man and Scarecrow (previously known as Me and Fiyero) characters in For Good. “By the way, wait until you see the Tin Man and the Scarecrow,” Chu teased. “These are not digital effects. These are real, physical makeup and hair, and it’s extraordinary. I can’t show you the footage here, but watch it and know there’s no room for error.”

Both “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” were filmed back-to-back in the UK, primarily at NBCUniversal’s vast new Sky Studios Elstree facility. The first big-screen version of Wicked, released in late 2024, became a pop culture phenomenon and box office hit, grossing over $750 million and becoming the fifth-highest grossing film of the year. The film was named one of the best films of the year by the American Film Institute, a best picture by the National Board of Review, and was nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Picture, and ultimately won Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
