During his recent appearance on MSNBC, Oscar-nominated director Rob Reiner issued a call to action against Donald Trump. He said it was “our job” as an influential voice to combat the insertion of national guards into the president’s major cities and attacks on free speech. He added that Trump’s efforts to “manage the election” through rezoning must be suspended before mid-term 2026.
“It’s beyond McCarthy’s timeline,” Reiner said. “I feel it tastes quaint compared to what’s happening in America right now. The Hollywood community is very well aware that their initial right to fix is being violated. So we know what’s going on. But our job as communicators now is to start communicating with the rest of the country and let them know what’s going on.”
He added that the needs of “dictators” are “two big things” being “media control” and “military control of the streets.” For the first, Reiner cited the recent suspension of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel after alleged threats from the FCC. Second, Reiner is most likely referring to Trump’s recent California State Guard deployment to Oregon. The Trump administration has already deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington DC.
“Don’t make a mistake. A year before this country became totally dictatorial, democracy will leave us forever,” he added. “And we’re watching the 2026 election. Donald Trump knows he’s going to lose in a free and fair election. He loses his home, turns his home over and becomes the hands of the Democrats.
