The Kerala State Film Development Corporation of India is launching the Kerala International Film Market, a professional industry platform, to be held in Thiruvananthapuram from December 13-16, with the aim of connecting regional filmmakers with global co-production and fundraising opportunities.
Malayalam cinemas produced in Kerala, South India, are known for their realistic storytelling, powerful literary adaptations, and have gained international recognition through filmmakers such as Adoaghoparakrishnan, the late Shaji N. Karun and recent commercial successes that fused the appeal of the mainstream.
The initiative represents the evolution of the Kerala film market, launched in 2023 as a knowledge sharing forum featuring panels and master classes. With two editions, the platform has grown organically into a networking space where projects were pitched and cross-border collaborations formed. The original concept was developed by Cannes Selection’s directors, Pirabi, Swaham, Vana Plus Sam, and former chairman of the KSFDC.
“The international film market in Kerala has made a huge leap in our state’s film journey,” said K. Madhu, veteran filmmaker and chairman of KSFDC. “IFMK offers just that: a space where ideas meet opportunities and film experts can engage in global markets with an equal footing.”
IFMK is designed as an integral component of the International Film Festival in Kerala, one of India’s most artistically respected festivals. While IFFK celebrates films as a cultural force, IFMK adds aspects of business that focus on co-production infrastructure, funding and market access.
“With the launch of IFMK, we complement that legacy by creating an industry arm focused on results, distribution and professional partnerships,” said Premkumar, actor and chairman of Sharachitra Academy, Kerala, which is affiliated with the initiative.
There are several major components in the market. Project market for pitching to producers, distributors and festivals. Fine Cut Lab provides post-production mentorship from international advisors. Industry consultations on production trends and technology. A video library for films seeking exposure to distribution and festivals. Exhibition space for film committees and service providers.
Leena Khobragade, former director of Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest project market, is a consultant, bringing international industry expertise to ventures.
