Benny Blanco worked with two jewellers to create Selena Gomez’s bespoke Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring, realizing the singer’s long-standing dreams. Gomez’s rings were designed for maximum shine, from stone cuts at the Marquise Center to diamond pabe bands.
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are officially married. Gomez shared photos from her wedding day, showing off two diamond bands on her right. She hasn’t announced her wedding ring yet. However, her bespoke Marquise Diamond Ring is well known and has been trending since her late 2024 debut.
Swing and ring designers Katherine Theophyllos Cluster and Abril Barrett’s Stephanie Theophyllos made thoughtful choices in the ring structure. That’s not too expensive. This is better, Lauren Bock, founder and CEO of Hera’s amazing jewelry, tells Elle. “I love how low your fingers are! It will make you wear a big diamond more comfortable and less likely to knock or catch something.”
For wedding rings, Boc said: “If I were me, I would pair this ring with something about the same width or a little wider than the engagement ring band.
Gomez introduced the world to the spark when he announced his engagement in December. The ring has made headlines and has since developed a renewed interest in Marquise Diamond. Elle spoke to jewellers about the impact on rings and bridal jewellery trends.
Here’s everything you need to know about unique works.
Gomez had dreamed of a Marquise Diamond Ring for years, so Slanco had that in mind when designing his work.
In a joint interview profile in January, Blanco and Gomez talked about her engagement ring. Gomez said he was inspired by the lyrics to 2015’s “Good for You.”
“It’s the diamond I’ve always dreamed of since the ‘good for you’ times, years ago,” she said.
Gomez said he designed the ring without help from her inner circle.
Blanco said, “I never take it seriously because we talk about everything all day long, so everything I say might be joking or authentic.”
The ring originally had more diamonds, and now the rest of the stones purchased by Blanco are reused for a pair of earrings.
Blanco told the following in an interview: And she changed her mind along the way.
“I think it’s too much,” Gomez said.
“Yeah, so now I have an extra baguette and we’re going to make earrings for her. She basically has three wedding rings.”
It’s not uncommon for couples to have spare diamonds during the bespoke process, Lauren Boc, founder and CEO of Hera Fine Jewelry, told Elle:
In December 2024, Theofilos Claster, one of the two Abril Bullet Jewelers behind the ring, spoke to Page 6 about the design process. “We started the project earlier this year. A great creative herself, Benny got certain inspiration, including the Center Cut, Marquise. We worked closely with multiple approaches before the final ring.
Gomez’s rings feature natural marquise stones with beautiful, cleverly executed cuts.
Blanco worked with jewellers Theofilos Claster and Theofilos to find a “exceptional” central stone. “The cut itself is an art. Its lines, facets, elongated shape and spread allow light to dance through every angle of the stone,” Theofilos Claster told Page 6. “It’s fascinating. The unusual and unique Marquise is a special microcosm.
The music producer knew when he found the diamond on the right. Theophyllos Cluster said: “Every natural stone has inexplicable energy. It is important to ensure that its vibrations, wavelengths and energy presence are in perfect harmony with the client. Benny was immediately drawn to the stone.
The cut is really everything, says Bock, and it shows with Gomez stones. “At Marquise Diamond, the quality of the cut is very important,” she explains. “If the cut is not perfect, there is a dark shadow in the center of the diamond, known as a bow tie. There is a slight rest in the facet pattern in the center of the marquise, but it should be dark or blocking the glow of the ring. Her diamond is really beautifully cut.”
Boc called how “well prescribed” he said, “I think she’s just too long and skinny, but she’s the perfect balance of being as thin and slender as you would want at Marquise.”
Steph Mazuera, who founded a uniquely named brand that creates bespoke engagement rings, agrees. “Serena’s Marquise has an incredible glow and character,” she tells Elle. “It’s essential to see beyond the certificate in elongated shapes, especially in marquees cuts. Inadequate cut marquees look lifeless, but she’s been cut beautifully.”
Jewelers estimate that Gomez’s rings weigh between 5 and 8 carats and are worth more than $225,000.
Ann Grimmett, vice president of merchandising at Jared Jewellers, tells Elle he believes Gomez has a “6-8 carat marquise diamond set in a yellow gold pave band.”
In February, Grimmett told people that the ring was worth $225,000.
Boc and Mazuera gave Elle a similar carat number. Mazuera is estimated to be between 6 and 7 carats and is worth “between $200,000 and $250,000”.
Meanwhile, BOC said: “I estimate Serena’s engagement ring is about five carats. The prong setting is pretty clean and simple, and it makes sense for such a beautiful diamond.
She had a slightly higher range of values. “Assuming diamonds are mined and there are exceptional quality and cuts, it’s about $250,000-$300,000.”
Gomez’s rings feature pave diamond bands and cathedral environments.
The glow is the stone in the center that does not stop. Ring designer Theofilos Claster told Page Six that the piece “has a handful of special symbols folded into the light optimization intent design.”
Pave Diamond Band brings a lot of sparkle to your work. As BOC explains to Elle, “Serena’s ring has a pretty substantial diamond pabe band. I love it. The band is spacious enough to keep that big diamond safe and appears to be proportional to the stone.
Gomez’s rings have been trending in that respect. “We’ve seen clients draw from very entrifying settings over the last year or so, looking for a wider band, more metal, more substantial look,” Bock says. “Serena definitely helps set that trend.”
There is a cathedral setting. This, Bock says, “when the stone rises from the fingers and the basket is attached to the band at the shoulder.” “The cathedral setting usually raises the diamond very high, but she still looks very low on her fingers. This is what I love about comfort and durability with such a large diamond. We create a lot of cathedral environments with spatulas. The cathedral basket is well protected, as it acts as a lateral brace and provides an extra point of contact between the basket and the band.”
The BOC explains how the cathedral setting works and other high set engagement rings.
Mazuela shares an example of the cathedral environment she went to showcase the details, telling Elle:
She also called out six prongs holding Gomez marquise diamonds because it was “the best choice for diamonds of this size and shape.” “Two pointed tips are the most vulnerable, especially in marquee cuts, and these end prongs are essential to protecting stones. Choosing six prongs instead of four (in the settings) adds both security and visual balance.”
Gomez’s rings sparked a surge in demand for Marquise Diamond engagement rings.
Six months after her debut with Sparkler, Gomez still has an impact on gem trends. BOCs are affecting their clients. “We’ve been increasing the number of requests for Marx’s diamonds last year or so, and it’s been accelerating since Serena got engaged. (Haley Bieber’s elongated oval diamond engagement ring has similarly increased interest in its shape.)
Grimett says Gomez’s rings have continued some popular trends over the past three to five years. “This includes larger stones, elongated fantasies, delicate bands, east-west explorations, and yellow gold. These trends emerged and were accelerated by celebrity engagement rings.”
Gomez’s rings in particular “has attracted attention on the Trend Marquise. Many of these important trends show up in celebrity engagement, but each ring is truly unique,” she tells Elle.
And Mazuela believes Gomez helped people choose the diamond shape that really is right for them.
“People tend to have strong opinions about diamond shapes, and marquees cuts can be particularly polarized,” the jeweller tells Elle. “The discourse around Serena’s ring reminds us that there’s no need to follow trends or general opinions. Most importantly, choose the ring you love, even if it’s unexpected or unconventional.”
