Actor producer Som Shah and his banner Som Shah Films have announced a collaboration with Penn Studios, led by industry stubborn Jayantilal Gada, for the highly anticipated sequel to the cult horror film, “Tambubad 2.”
The announcement comes shortly after the notable box office revival of the original in 2018, with a 2024 re-release in India winning $1.5 million. This is a testament to the film’s enduring appeal.
Following the pursuit of the treasures of a cursed ancestor protected by the devil, Tambad was the first Indian film to launch a week of Venice critics in 2018.
Now with “Tumbbad 2,” the makers promise to dig deeper into the universe that redefines the fantasy horror of Indian cinema. The project is supported by credited pen studios such as “Sita Ramam” and Berlinale’s title “Gangubai Kathiawadi”, and is expected to start production early next year.
Shah said: “I have respected Jayantilal Ghada Ji’s work for many years. When he met him to discuss “Tambad 2”, he locked the deal within just five minutes. It is a dream-like faith of every storyteller.
Co-director Rahi Anil Barve will not return to the sequel due to other commitments, but Adesh Prasad, who co-directed the original “Tumbbad,” will be at the helm of the new installments.
The sequel has been made for years, and Shah previously said, “It took six years to complete it because the script is ready. I cracked the idea with great difficulty to ensure that it was justified in the world of “Tambad.”
