ABC News Studios canceled the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of the documentary “Lilith Fair: Building A Mystery – The Toldold Story.”
“Please note that this event will no longer host the red carpet,” reads an email sent to media members early on Saturday night. “We apologize for any inconvenience, feedback, and apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
There was no reason for the sudden change, but the scaled back plan took place amid a controversy over Disney’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel amid threats from the FCC and a campaign against hosts promoted by right-wing media.
The Knicks on the “Lilith Fair” red carpet covered the event just 24 hours after confirmation emails were sent to reporters and photographers. This includes not only Salama Klachlan, Jewel and Meer walking down the carpet, but director Aly Pankiu.
The premier screening and surprise performance will be held at Ford, Hollywood at 6pm
A representative from ABC News Studios did not comment on the story.
The host has not made public comments since “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” It was pulled out of the usual 11:35pm slot on September 17th. Disney says the program is out of “unlimited” after Nexstar, one of the biggest owners of Nexstar, Nexstar, one of the largest owners of US television stations. Sinclair, the owner of another large station, said it also removed Kimmel from the station.
ABC News Studios released Hulu and Hulu’s “Lilith Fair” on Sunday on Disney+ and Disney+ in the US.
The backlash from the creative community towards Kimmel’s suspension is growing. Celebrities and politicians are ringing publicly. Most recently, Marvel star Mark Ruffalo re-shared a report on a thread claiming Disney’s stock fell 7% after ABC preempted with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He wrote, “If they cancel his show, it’s going to go way further down. Disney doesn’t want to be what destroyed America.” (In fact, it was 1% on Thursday and 0.95% on Friday.)
Fellow MCU-ER Kathryn Hearn also weighed on September 20th. The “Agatha All Allow” star posted a story on Instagram showing her hosting and a story as a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel.” In addition to throwing emojis, she wrote “#FreeSpeech #JimmyKimmellive.”
On social media, Hulu and Disney+ users post about canceling their subscription to Streaming Services.
Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner also took the company to Task.
“Where did all the leadership go?” Eisner wrote in an X post on Friday. “Without the university president, the administrative partner of the law firm, and the CEO of a company that stands up against bullies, who will stand up to the first revision?”
“Jimmy Kimmel’s “indefinitely halt” shortly after the chairman of the Disney company’s offensive yet false threats is another example of an out-of-control blackmail. Perhaps the Constitution should not say that Congress should not enact laws that reduce freedom of speech.
Kimmel’s late-night fellow hosts, John Stewart, Seth Myers and Jimmy Fallon, expressed their support during the opening monologue of their show.
President Donald Trump is unwavering in his support of FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr.
“You have a network, you have an evening show and all they do is hit Trump,” Trump said on September 18th.
Speaking to Air Force 1 reporters, the president complained that 97% of broadcast news reports were “opposed to me.”
“They give me only bad news,” he said. “They have licenses. I think they should probably take away their licenses. It’s up to Brendan Kerr. I think Brendan Kerr is outstanding. He’s a patriot. He loves our country and he’s a tough guy.
The “Lilith Fair” document was commissioned by CBC and produced by Dan Levy as the real production company and elevation of ABC News Studios, and was announced by White Horse Pictures in connection with Epic Magazine.
In a review of the document, Variety’s Chris Wilman wrote, “Reflecting on absorbing why a Sarah McLachlan-led women-led festival in the 1990s felt revolutionary.”
