The Actors Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, announced their film and television nominations Wednesday with hosts Janelle James and Connor Story. More than 122,000 SAG-AFTRA performers are eligible to vote for winners and remains the largest voting body of any major awards show.
This year’s eligibility period is open to performances released between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
The ceremony is considered a key precursor to the Oscars, and is often the key driver for actors and films to earn Academy Award nominations and ultimately wins.
Since the ensemble category was introduced in 1995, only four films have won the Academy Award for Best Picture without being nominated in the SAG Ensemble category: Braveheart (1995), The Shape of Water (2017), Green Book (2018), and Nomadland (2020). Since the Academy expanded the Best Picture category in 2009, 61 of the 80 SAG Ensemble nominations (76% success rate) have been nominated for Best Picture, underscoring the category’s value as a reliable Oscar metric.
SAG’s predictive power extends to the movie actor race. Since 2009, an average of 16 out of 20 SAG film actor nominations have coincided with the Academy Awards, for an 80% match rate. The strongest collaboration occurred in 2009, the year of The Hurt Locker, when 19 of the 20 SAG nominees received Oscar nominations. The weakest crossover occurred in 2021, the year of “CODA”, where the overlap decreased to 12 out of 20.
Final voting to determine the winner will take place from January 14th to February 27th at noon Pacific time. The 32nd Annual Actor Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA, will be broadcast live on Netflix on March 1st.
