The Academy has announced the complete list of films eligible for the Animation, Documentary and International Feature categories at the 98th Oscar Awards, but some films have yet to receive a qualifying release and the list must be filled by the end of the year to comply with Oscar regulations.
The Animated Feature category includes 35 titles for consideration. Those in the Academy’s animation department were eligible to vote to determine the five nominees. Other members outside the chapter are invited to vote, subject to minimum viewing requirements.
The documentary feature attracted the most eligible entries across three categories, with 201 titles considered. Members of the documentary category will vote on a shortlist of 15 films, which will be announced on December 16th. That small pool of candidates will then be narrowed down to five candidates.
The International Feature Film category attracted 86 eligible entries from countries and regions around the world. The Academy defines an international feature film as a full-length film (40 minutes or longer) that is produced outside the United States and contains a primarily non-English dialogue track. Academy members from all chapters can vote in the qualifying rounds if they meet the minimum viewing requirements for their category. As with the documentary category, the final list of 15 titles will be announced on December 16th.
